British expats looking for a move across to Canada are beginning to believe they are not welcome on the other side of the Atlantic.
The Canadian immigration service seems to have gremlins in the system after a succession of confusing announcements about their new online visa service for Brits.
Timing seems to be a major issue – with the office processing visa requests based in Vancouver – so when the web site says visas are available from 9 am on a certain day, really it’s 5 pm in the UK because the city is so far west and lags the UK.
The number of visas has also faced a cap – about 5,350 were issued but many more applicants were left disappointed.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has also flagged three upcoming announcements about the closed skilled worker program, which reopens in May.
CIC says further details will be released soon about:
- A cap on the number of available visas
- A list of priority occupations
- Accredited organisations for educational assessments under the program
Canada has changed immigration rules several times over recent months.
Fraudster warning
The latest warning for expats is to watch out for fraudsters charging fees to help foreigners with their visa application and hunt for work. Despite taking money, many of the scammers fail to deliver results.
CIC are also warning Canadians and expats about marriages of convenience to try to help foreigners gain citizenship and immigration rights.
To curb the number of marriages of convenience, the CIC demands sponsored spouses or partners must live with their partner for at least 24 months from the date they attain permanent residence.
Anyone gaining sponsored residence must wait five years before they can sponsor someone else.
Immigration authorities have found 11,000 marriages of convenience involving expats from more than 100 different countries. Following the inquiry, 1,800 other applications for sponsored residency were withdrawn.
Student visa abuse
The government has also drafted new guidelines to stop abuse of Canada’s international student program.
The regulations include checks that students enrol and attend a course at an accredited higher education institution once they arrive in Canada.
“The government is constantly looking at how to improve the immigration system to cut out abuses,” said Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.
“Canada welcomes hard working newcomers who play by the immigration rules, but the government will stop anyone trying to con their way in to the country without going through the normal immigration channels.”
