F1 Classic Racer Sells For $29.6 Million At Auction

A Mercedes Benz racing car once driven by Formula 1’s legendary Juan Manuel Fangio went under the hammer as the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

An anonymous private telephone buyer paid $29.6 million for the 1954 W196 racing car, beating six other bidders.

The previous record was held by a 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa, which fetched $16.4 million at auction in 2011.

Argentinian Fangio drove the Mercedes to win the 1954 driver’s world championship – including going first past the chequered flag in the German and Swiss grand prixs.

Auctioneers Bonhams described the steel coloured car as ‘unspoilt’ and that the car just needed a service to return to full racing order.

The car – which has a top speed of 180mph – was sold by the Emir of Qatar, who had owned the car for around eight years.

Only 15 versions of the 2.5 litre car were built by Mercedes Benz.

John Lennon’s Ferrari 330GT also sold at the Goodwood, Sussex, auction – fetching almost $550,000.

James Bond’s submarine car for sale

The famous underwater car from the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me is due to go to auction soon.

RM Auctions is handling the sale of the Lotus Esprit Series 1.

Even making a guess at the likely price is impossible, as the vehicle is the world’s only fully working submarine car.

The car was famously driven by Bond Roger Moor in the 1970s film.

As a price guide, another James Bond signature car – the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger and Thunderball – sold for £2.9 million in 2010.
