The US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) register of financial institutions has passed the 200,000 milestone as the US government pledges to enforce the tough rules.
Although FATCA was passed in 2010, the road to implementation has been long and rocky.
But from July 1, any financial institution that does not have a FATCA registration which fails to file full disclosure of the financial details of all US clients to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) faces some hefty penalties.
The punishments range from fines to a 30% withholding tax on all US dollar transactions or even expulsion from the US financial markets.
The latest list shows 202,292 financial institutions registered on June 24, 2016.
The Cayman Islands (37,694 registrations) and the UK (26,509) take the top places in the list of 227 financial jurisdictions worldwide.
What is FATCA?
Under FATCA, foreign financial institutions with accounts controlled by US taxpayers must tell the IRS who runs the account and pass on the details of any earnings or capital gains in the tax year.
Reports are filed for US residents with offshore account balances of $50,000 or more and US expats with offshore balances of $200,000 or more.
The next FATCA list is due for publication by the IRS on August 1, 2016.
