The number of financial institutions outside the USA passing information about their American customers to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is continuing to swell.
The IRS publishes a list of FATCA compliant organisations every month.
The latest has grown from 193,450 financial institutions at the start of May to 197,736 at the start of June.
The top 10 financial centres account for 113,512 registrations – 57% of the total. The Cayman Islands (36,934 registrations) and the UK (26,207) top the table.
The remaining 207 countries account for 84,224 registrations (43%).
What is FATCA?
Under FATCA, financial institutions with accounts controlled by US taxpayers must tell the IRS who runs the account and details of any earnings or capital gains. If the institution fails to file an accurate report, the organisation faces a fine and other potential penalties.
Reports are filed for US residents with offshore account balances of $50,000 or more and US expats with offshore balances of $200,000 or more.
The next FATCA list is due for publication by the IRS on July 1, 2016.
