New names have been added to the list of tax cheats named and shamed by HM Revenue and Customs.
But if anyone is expecting to see details of the wealthy, celebrities or big corporations on the list, then they face some disappointment.
The name and shame policy is meant to expose the worst offenders evading tax but fails to include any individuals or companies that have hit the headlines in select committee grillings in Parliament by MPs.
Instead, the list mainly comprises bars, restaurants and builders.
A couple of the tax cheats Birmingham-based Paymaster Ltd and EU Oil Ltd, of Harlow, Essex, had assessments of a £1 plus but most of the offenders owe HMRC much less.
To qualify for the list, tax cheats must owe at least £25,000.
Fear factor
HMRC justifies publishing the names as a fear factor for tax defaulters by explaining the policy encourages taxpayers to settle their bills.
HMRC’s Jennie Granger, Director General for Enforcement and Compliance, said: “Most taxpayers pay their dues but a few try to evade their liabilities which is unfair on everyone else.
“Deciding to publish names on the list is something we consider carefully. These people and firms have cheated the rest of us. Putting up their names lets everyone know we are doing something to tackle the problem.
“The best way to deal with tax is to tell HMRC about your financial affairs and co-operate to settle any outstanding bills.”
The name and shame list is published on the HMRC web site.
