Financial expert Jeffrey Sprecher is warning cryptocurrencies are here to stay and can no longer be ignored by banks and governments.
Sprecher, CEO of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)– the group that runs the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and more than 20 other stock exchanges around the world – says the day is dawning when cryptocurrency futures will join the NYSE.
“I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Sprecher said. “There is a trend here we can’t ignore in my mind, so I don’t discount it.
“People put more faith in a guy named Satoshi Nakamoto that no one has ever met than they do in the US Federal Reserve. People are more comfortable in technology than the institutions of government and society that I grew up with.”
Nakamoto is the legendary founder of Bitcoin, the first and largest cryptocurrency. He has never appeared in public nor given interviews, leading to doubts that he exists.
ICE has stakes in several cryptocurrency exchanges.
Cryptojacking is the new hacking fad
UK cyber security experts are warning cryptojacking is likely to rise in notoriety.
Cryptojacking is when a hacker ‘piggy-backs’ on computer processing power without permission of the owner to mine cryptocurrency.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has noticed a trend for hackers to take up cryptojacking.
“The technique of delivering cryptocurrency miners through malware has been used for several years, but it is likely in 2018-19 that one of the main threats will be a newer technique of mining cryptocurrency which exploits visitors to a website,” a NCSC report says.
The report added that in 2017, 55% of businesses worldwide were impacted by cryptocurrency miners and more than 4,000 websites secretly mined cryptocurrencies using a plugin for visually-impaired users.
