Thousands more foreign financial institutions signed up to confirm that they are ready to report information about their customers to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
The IRS publishes a list of FATCA compliant organisations every month.
The latest has swelled from 190,253 last month to 193,450 for May.
The top 10 financial centres account for 111,323 registrations – 57% of the total. The Cayman Islands (36,322) and Britain (25738) top the table.
The remaining 207 countries account for 82,127 registrations (43%).
What is FATCA?
Under FATCA, financial institutions with accounts controlled by US taxpayers must tell the IRS who runs the account and details of any earnings or capital gains. If the institution fails to file an accurate report, the organisation faces a fine and other penalties.
Reports are filed for US residents with offshore account balances of $50,000 or more and US expats with balances of $200,000 or more.
The next FATCA list is due for publication by the IRS on April 1, 2016.
